Missions

The Great Commission Requires a Great Commitment

Some of us may never experience being a missionary abroad yet we are all called to be missionaries where the Lord has planted us. Church of the Open Door supports a wide variety of missionaries both domestically and internationally who serve to bring the Good News of Jesus to the lost. It is our fervent desire to continue to expand the missions ministry to fulfill the Great Commission. Listed below are missionaries and organizations we support.

Our Missionaries

Rev. David and Crissie Boyd

David and Crissie are serving the Lord with Baptist Mid-Missions in the Netherlands. They have been involved in church-planting in Veghel in northeastern Holland since 1983, along with organizing summer camps for children and teens there for over twenty-five years.

Lisa Catton

Lisa is an Area Representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She serves in universities and high schools on or near the Main Line in the Greater Philadelphia area, encouraging coaches and student-athletes and helping to train them how to share their faith and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Paul and Robin Johnson

Paul and Robin have been ministering among the indigenous tribes of the Amazon region of South America for many years. They have been involved with tribal pastors’ conferences, tribal leadership conferences, and partnering with FAIENAP (the tribal church association in that area which sends out native missionaries to other parts of that region). The Johnsons have expanded their vision with an organization entitled ALTECO, a consortium of organizations, churches and businesses, spreading the Good News of Jesus in the Amazon region.

Javier and Betzabe Mayorga

Javier and Betzabe serve with ALTECO, Colombia. The Mayorgas have been in full-time ministry among Colombia’s indigenous people in the Amazon region since 2009, training and empowering Christian leaders. They have been working closely with Paul and Robin Johnson, who COD has supported for many years.

Howard and Virginia McConnell

Having served for over 30 years with WEC International at the U.S. head-quarters in Fort Washington, PA, and then in the New Zealand office, Howard and Virginia have answered God’s call to work with Crisis Care Training International in South Carolina. This ministry is part of WEC’s outreach to train others to reach those who are in crises situations.

Benjamin and Julia Shimomura

Ben and Julia serve with the Mustard Seed Network (MSN) church in Kyoto, Japan.  Ben has been living in Japan since 2013, having taught English there initially, and then as a student, learning the Japanese language at university in Osaka where he began attending the MSN church-Osaka. Since early in 2019, Ben has been serving in the MSN church-Kyoto in a variety of functions as the church seeks to bring Japanese people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ and disciple them. Ben and Julia were married in 2023.

Paul and Kitty Trout

Paul and Kitty have served the Lord ministering throughout Mexico and Arizona since the early 1990s. Paul and Kitty are working with Lampstand ministries, a mission organization whose primary objective is to aid local churches. Paul and Kitty’s ministry includes evangelism and discipleship, and encouragement of local pastors on both sides of the border.

Tom and Alicia Vosters

Tom and Alicia and their two sons, Mason and Camryn, have been missionaries in Cambodia  with World Team since 2017.  In the late summer of 2020, they will be opening a Christ-centered University Dormitory for Cambodian Students in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Neighborhood Crusades

Rev. Melvin Floyd founded and directed a multi-faceted urban ministry in Philadelphia, seeking to reach those who do not know Jesus. Melvin’s daughter, Esther, and her husband, Rev. Daniel Sawyer, now direct this ministry which includes the Melvin Floyd School of Evangelism and Missions, Anti-Drug Night Crusades, holding street meetings during the summer months in the city, teaching relationship enrichment courses, and involvement in prison ministries.

The Saints Prison Ministry

The Saints Prison Ministry presents the Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners through athletics and mentors them towards spiritual maturity as they successfully transition into family and community.

The Philadelphia Bible Society

The Philadelphia Bible Society exists to “freely distribute the scriptures.” We continue to be entrusted with the mission of making God’s Word available to any and all who would receive from us.

We also support several missionaries in areas closed to the Gospel, where conditions are too sensitive to publish their names or locations.
